Guerrero advances climate strategy and coastal protection

The Guerrero State Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMAREN) is advancing two major environmental initiatives focused on climate change and coastal protection.

In its final stage of development, the state is finalizing the Guerrero State Climate Change Strategy. Led by SEMAREN head Ángel Almazán Juárez, the process involves collaboration between academic institutions, such as the Autonomous University of Guerrero, and technical consultants like IDOM. The strategy aims to establish actionable plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing adaptation measures tailored to the state’s specific environmental conditions.

Simultaneously, SEMAREN is addressing the impact of the ‘Mar de Fondo’ phenomenon on coastal ecosystems. During the Second National Forum on ‘Mar de Fondo,’ officials emphasized the need for inter-institutional coordination to protect marine environments. Current efforts include cleaning and restoring lagoon systems, such as Mitla-Coyuca, Puerto Marqués, and Tres Palos, as well as mangrove recovery projects and participation in federal beach cleaning programs across the Costa Grande, Costa Chica, and Acapulco regions.
