Guerrero art schools to reopen despite reported salary arrears
The Secretariat of Culture of Guerrero has reversed its decision to close several artistic initiation schools associated with the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL). This decision allows for a new school cycle to begin in October for institutions in Taxco, Chilpancingo, Pungarabato, and Acapulco.
Despite the reopening, Derek Badillo Gómez, academic coordinator for the Taxco school, reported that staff are owed four months of unpaid salaries. He emphasized the urgent need for budgetary support to maintain facilities, provide materials, and ensure the stability of the teaching staff as the new semester approaches.
In a separate development regarding artistic education, the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico, through INBAL, has opened registration for 42 free vocational art workshops at El Arsenal: Centro de Formación y Producción Artística. Starting in September 2026, these workshops cover disciplines such as textiles, ceramics, and stained glass, offering flexible learning paths for youth to develop creative and professional skills.
