Guerrero families return to Tula following criminal violence displacement

Displaced families are returning to the Tula community in Chilapa, Guerrero, following three months of flight caused by violence between criminal groups. The Mexican Ministry of the Interior (Segob) reported that 17 families have returned to their homes with support from federal and state authorities. As part of a security plan for the Montaña region, the National Guard and the military maintain a presence in the area to ensure stability.

To facilitate the return, authorities rehabilitated homes, restored basic services, and provided essential goods and access to welfare programs. This movement is part of a broader master plan involving 19 communities across four municipalities. The original displacement in May was driven by territorial disputes between criminal organizations identified as ‘Los Ardillos’ and ‘Los Tlacos’.

In other parts of the Chilpancingo sierra, such as Agua Hernández and Rincón de Alcaparrosa, residents have faced different outcomes. Some communities reported an exodus of approximately 100 families due to fears of attacks and looting following the withdrawal of security bases. Residents in these areas have requested the return of state police and military forces to allow for a safe return to their lands.
