Guerrero: Former mayor Gilberto Dorantes killed in highway ambush
Multiple violent incidents have been reported across various Mexican states. In Guerrero, Gilberto Dorantes Basurto, the former mayor of Coahuayutla and current subdirector of Public Security for La Unión, was killed in an ambush on the Zihuatanejo-Lázaro Cárdenas highway. The attack, carried out by an armed group against an official police patrol, also resulted in the death of officer Silvano Peñaloza Peñaloza and left a third officer seriously injured. The PRD party has condemned the killing and demanded a thorough investigation.
In Oaxaca, the state prosecutor's office (FGEO) has initiated legal proceedings against two municipal officials from Santiago Choápam—a councilman and a municipal trustee—for aggravated political violence against women based on gender. The charges stem from an incident in June 2026 where the municipal president was allegedly intimidated and forced to sign a resignation document. Additionally, a second municipal trustee in Oaxaca de Juárez, Ricardo Ramírez Pérez, is under investigation for alleged involvement in vehicle theft and trafficking.
Other violent events include the shooting of a young man in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, who was pursued into a home by gunmen, and the assassination of a health center director in Ayala, Morelos, at his residence. In Reynosa, Tamaulipas, a man was shot dead outside his home in the Longoria neighborhood, following another shooting near a shopping center.
