Guerrero initiatives target violence prevention through culture and social workshops

In the state of Guerrero, Mexico, local authorities and cultural leaders are promoting diverse strategies to prevent violence through social and cultural engagement.

In Taxco de Alarcón, the municipal government led a workshop titled “Men who choose respect, equality, and responsibility.” Part of the 2026 Crime Prevention Projects, the initiative aims to foster new forms of masculinity based on respect, listening, and shared responsibility within the family and community to build a culture of peace.

In Acapulco, former federal legal counselor Esthela Damián Peralta proposed using art and culture as structural tools for violence prevention. During a meeting with artists and cultural promoters, Damián argued that institutional presence in vulnerable neighborhoods—offering educational, sporting, and cultural alternatives—is essential to provide youth with opportunities before they turn to crime.
