Guerrero kidnapping survivors recount 22 days of captivity

Survivors of a mass kidnapping in the Mexican state of Guerrero have provided accounts of their 22-day captivity. The victims, including residents of the El Balcón communal landholding in Ajuchitlán del Progreso, were abducted on September 24 by large groups of armed gunmen.

One survivor reported that the captors moved them through back trails toward Arcelia. The victims described being subjected to physical torture and severe food restrictions, often receiving only one tortilla per day. During their confinement, captives discovered they were part of a much larger group; one victim estimated there were approximately 136 people held in total, including women, elderly individuals, and children as young as 12.

Reports suggest the abductions may be linked to efforts by criminal organizations, such as La Familia Michoacana, to expand territorial control and seize land for timber resources. While some victims have been released, others remain missing, and local religious leaders have noted that captives may be moved between various locations, including the State of Mexico, to evade security operations.
