Gueta Chapo announces reconstruction of Maputo nursery after fire

Mozambican First Lady Gueta Selemane Chapo has announced the complete reconstruction and modernization of the Infantário 1.º de Maio in Maputo following a devastating fire. After visiting the site, the First Lady determined that the building and its furniture were too heavily damaged for simple rehabilitation, stating, “we have really concluded that we have to destroy and rebuild from scratch.”

Chapo noted that her office has engaged partners and sponsors to mobilize resources for the construction and the acquisition of new equipment. She praised the nursery staff for their successful evacuation of all children, confirming that no children were injured during the incident.

In response to the fire, the First Lady called for increased safety standards in childcare infrastructure, urging contractors to follow proper construction patterns and emphasizing the need for robust, secure buildings. She also highlighted the necessity of improving electrical installations in such institutions to prevent recurring incidents.
