Guggenheim Abu Dhabi to open on Saadiyat Island in December

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is scheduled to open on December 11 on Saadiyat Island, following two decades of planning and construction. The project, which has approached a cost of $1 billion, will serve as the largest branch in the Guggenheim’s four-country network. Valerie Hillings has been appointed as the institution’s inaugural director.

Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the museum aims to place regional and Emirati artists at the heart of its exhibitions rather than as supporting figures. While tourism is a key economic driver for the UAE, Al Kaabi emphasized that the primary goal for these cultural institutions is to build a dedicated, returning audience through engaging experiences.

The museum is part of a growing cultural district on Saadiyat Island that includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi. Despite regional tensions and the impact of recent conflicts in the Middle East, officials confirmed the opening will proceed as planned.
