Guiana dolphin found dead with suspected fishing net injuries in Alagoas
A juvenile female Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) was found dead at Praia do Francês in Marechal Deodoro, Alagoas. Biologists from the Instituto Biota de Conservação noted that the 148-centimeter animal showed external injuries on its rostrum, which are highly consistent with entanglement in fishing nets.
The carcass has been sent for a detailed necropsy to officially determine the cause of death. The Guiana dolphin is a common species on the northeastern coast of Brazil and is considered one of the marine mammals most vulnerable to incidental capture by gillnets.
