Guide to preventing mold in wooden furniture

Mold in wooden furniture is a common issue in humid environments, potentially compromising furniture integrity and causing respiratory health problems. Because wood is hygroscopic, it absorbs and releases moisture from the air, which, when combined with poor ventilation and organic matter like dust, creates an ideal environment for fungus.

To combat mold, a three-step strategy is recommended:

1. Drying: Completely empty drawers and shelves, move the furniture a few centimeters away from the wall to allow air circulation, and leave doors and drawers open for several hours on a dry day.

2. Protecting the Finish: Once dry, applying compatible products such as waxes, specific oils, or varnishes can create a surface barrier to reduce moisture absorption. It is essential to ensure the product matches the existing finish to avoid altering color or shine.

3. Improving Air Circulation: Preventing recurrence requires maintaining better airflow in the room and ensuring that damp items, such as clothes or towels, are not stored inside the furniture.
