Guide to virtualization support and setup on Windows and Linux

Users can run virtual machines on Windows 11 using several methods depending on their system edition. Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise users can utilize the built-in Hyper-V feature, which requires enabling virtualization in the UEFI/BIOS and turning on the feature through Windows features. For Windows 11 Home users, third-party options such as Oracle VirtualBox or VMware Workstation are recommended.

On Linux systems, verifying hardware support for VT-x (Intel) or AMD-V (AMD) is a critical first step before installing hypervisors like KVM, QEMU, or Proxmox. If virtualization flags are missing, the issue is typically resolved via a firmware toggle in the UEFI rather than software reinstallation. Recent Linux kernel updates, such as Linux 7.3, have introduced improvements to KVM memory management, but these require hardware-level virtualization to be active to function effectively.
