Guided‑Only Access Trial on Monte Penna in Italy’s Casentinesi Forest Park

The Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna – a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its ancient beech and oak forests and historic monasteries – announced a pilot scheme to restrict access to Monte Penna. From 11 to 19 August, hikers may reach the 1,331‑metre summit only when accompanied by park‑approved guides, in groups of up to 25, with free service and no reservation required. The trial runs from 08:30 to 18:30, prohibits bicycles and horses, and aims to curb erosion and protect rare plant species observed on the Cai 225 trail.

The measure has provoked strong reactions from local users and environmental groups, some accusing the park of over‑regulation and commercialising guide services, while others welcome the effort to preserve the fragile ecosystem. The park’s biodiversity unit, the Carabinieri Biodiversità di Pratovecchio, will oversee compliance during the experimental period.
