Guidelines for Safely Handling and Caring for Wild Hedgehogs
Wild hedgehogs should only be handled when they face imminent danger, injury, illness, or are orphaned. To protect both the animal and the rescuer, thick gloves or a towel should be used, and the creature should be gently lifted from underneath, avoiding its face and quills.
If intervention is necessary, the hedgehog should be placed in a ventilated, high‑sided box with soft bedding, provided with a warm (but not hot) source, and offered appropriate food such as meat‑based cat or dog food and fresh water. Care should be temporary, aimed at stabilising the animal before releasing it back to its natural habitat. Release guidelines advise returning the hedgehog to a safe, suitable environment once it appears healthy.
