Guidelines for storing leftover Halloween candy
To maintain quality, leftover wrapped Halloween candy should be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry, and dark location. Avoiding exposure to heat, sunlight, moisture, and strong odors is essential to prevent candy from becoming sticky, stale, or losing flavor.
Shelf life varies significantly by candy type. Dark chocolate can last between one and two years if foil-wrapped and stored properly, while milk and white chocolate typically remain good for eight to ten months. Hard candies, such as lollipops, can last up to a year, whereas soft or jellied varieties generally hold quality for six to nine months. Candy corn typically lasts three to six months once opened.
Consumers should inspect candy for mold, fuzz, bloating, off odors, or insect activity before consumption. While white or gray streaks on chocolate—known as bloom—may affect appearance due to heat or moisture, it does not make the chocolate unsafe to eat and can still be used for baking.
