Guidelines for unplugging home devices during thunderstorms

Experts advise that during thunderstorms the most vulnerable household electronics should be disconnected from the mains. Items with complex circuitry such as televisions, computers, laptops, gaming consoles, routers, modems, phone chargers and audio equipment are recommended to be unplugged before a storm arrives. Refrigerators and freezers can generally remain powered unless there is a risk of flooding or an official power shutdown, as turning them off may spoil food.

Using extension cords for large appliances like ovens, refrigerators or microwaves is discouraged because thin cables can overheat or cause fires. Surge protectors may help with minor voltage spikes but cannot guarantee protection against a direct lightning strike. Proper grounding of the home’s electrical system and replacing old two‑pole sockets are also emphasized. In cases of severe weather warnings, authorities may suggest unplugging all non‑essential devices to prevent fire or electric shock hazards.
