Bird feeding guidelines for winter and autumn
As temperatures drop and food becomes scarce due to frost and snow, experts provide guidance on supporting wild birds during the winter months. Organizations such as NABU Baden-Württemberg and the Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung recommend starting feeding in November and continuing until the end of February.
Sunflower seeds are identified as an excellent base food for many species. Seed-eaters like finches and sparrows benefit from various grain mixes, while soft-food eaters such as robins and blackbirds prefer oats, fruit pieces, or dried berries. Fat-rich foods like suet balls are also highly beneficial for maintaining body temperature.
To ensure bird safety and health, experts advise against providing bread or food scraps, which can contain harmful salt. It is also recommended to avoid suet balls wrapped in plastic netting, as birds can become entangled. Instead, using silo-style feeders is preferred to protect food from wind, weather, and droppings. Additionally, feeders should be placed in locations inaccessible to cats.
