Italy corruption investigations: Reconstruction and gaming sector probes

Multiple corruption investigations have been launched in Italy, targeting post-earthquake reconstruction funds and the electronic gaming sector.

In the “Ricostruzione” investigation led by the Ancona District Anti-Mafia Directorate, authorities are examining irregularities regarding the funding of the ‘Le Monachette’ complex in Macerata. Guido Castelli, the extraordinary commissioner for post-earthquake reconstruction, issued a statement defending his conduct. He clarified that his interactions with former chief of staff Fabio Pistarelli involved only public administrative information regarding Erdis and earthquake relief regulations. The probe also examines allegations of bribes related to hospital maintenance contracts in Fermo, with investigators looking into potential links to organized crime groups.

Separately, in Cosenza, 15 individuals are facing precautionary measures following an investigation into the management of electronic gaming machines. The probe, conducted by the Carabinieri and the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM), alleges a criminal association involved in corruption, fraud against the state, and the disclosure of official secrets. Investigators identified anomalies in gaming volumes and suspect that officials may have tipped off entrepreneurs about inspections to allow for the concealment of irregular devices.
