Guijó Bridge collapses in Guatemala following triple collision
A triple collision involving a trailer and two private vehicles caused the total collapse of the Guijó Bridge in Usumatlán, Zacapa, on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The accident occurred on the CA-9 North highway, a major connection route in Guatemala.
Emergency responders, including Bomberos Voluntarios, reported that the impact and a subsequent fire caused the bridge structure to fail. Preliminary reports indicate at least four fatalities, including three individuals on the trailer and one pedestrian. Five people were injured; two were transported to the Zacapa Regional Hospital in critical condition, while three others were taken to the National Hospital in Guastatoya, El Progreso.
The CA-9 North highway remains completely blocked in both directions. Authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes while the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure, and Housing assesses the damage and coordinates emergency responses.
