Guilford County Board Slashes Early Voting Sites at NC A&T and UNCG

The Guilford County Board of Elections voted 4‑1 to approve a 17‑site early‑voting map for the 2026 midterm elections that excludes campus locations at North Carolina A&T State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Guilford Technical Community College. The two university sites had served thousands of voters in recent elections—6,487 at NC A&T and 6,800 at UNCG—primarily Black and young voters.

Students and community advocates criticized the plan as a discriminatory barrier, calling the decision a “racist act.” Because the vote was not unanimous, the proposal will be reviewed by the North Carolina State Board of Elections. The board added alternate sites, including a location in rural Stokesdale and a collaborative educational building in downtown Greensboro, but critics say these are less accessible for the affected voters. The controversy reflects ongoing tensions over voter‑access policies near historically Black colleges and universities in the state.
