Guillermo Almada manages roster shifts and player tensions at Club América

Under the leadership of new manager Guillermo Almada, Club América is undergoing significant roster adjustments during the Apertura 2026 season. Alexis Gutiérrez, who joined the club from Cruz Azul for $5 million, has seen a sharp decline in playing time. Gutiérrez has participated in only five of eight possible matches in the Apertura 2026 and played just one match in the Leagues Cup. Despite having a contract through the summer of 2029, he has become a secondary option in the midfield behind players such as Ícaro Conceicao and Edwin Cerrillo.

Additionally, tensions have surfaced on the pitch during the Clásico Nacional. Manager Guillermo Almada was captured on camera expressing intense frustration toward midfielder Erick Sánchez. The confrontation occurred during the match as Almada appeared to reprimand Sánchez for failing to follow tactical instructions. This incident follows a period of high intensity for the manager as the team seeks to improve its performance.
