Guillermo Bermejo: Supreme Court evaluates appeal against terrorism conviction
The Transitory Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court is conducting a hearing to evaluate a nullity appeal filed by former congressman Guillermo Bermejo. Bermejo is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence at the Ancón I penitentiary for affiliation with the terrorist organization Sendero Luminoso.
Bermejo was convicted in October 2025. The court determined that between 2008 and 2009, he voluntarily traveled to Sendero Luminoso camps in the Vraem region (Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro river valleys), where he engaged in ideological indoctrination and recruitment activities. His sentence also includes a two-year disqualification from holding public office and a 100,000 soles fine for civil reparations.
The Public Ministry has formally requested that the conviction be upheld. In Dictamen N° 155-2026, the First Supreme Prosecutor's Office stated there are no objective reasons to annul the sentence, arguing it is properly motivated by coherent factual and legal evidence. The case has drawn attention from the Ombudsman's Office regarding potential procedural delays, though the court maintains that files are processed according to legal order.
