Guillermo del Toro confirms failed BioShock film adaptation
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has confirmed long-standing rumors regarding a failed attempt to adapt the video game ‘BioShock’ into a feature film. In an interview with IGN, del Toro revealed that while he was involved in early discussions for the project, the development process ended prematurely due to highly contentious negotiations.
Del Toro described the discussions surrounding the adaptation as “probably the most disastrous calls I’ve ever had in my life,” though he did not specify the parties involved or the exact nature of the disagreement.
Reflecting on the challenges of the medium, the director noted that the storytelling dynamics of video games differ significantly from traditional cinema. He explained that while games may appear cinematic, they rely on player agency and decision-making that do not translate directly to a film structure. Due to these negative experiences, del Toro indicated he has little interest in pursuing video game adaptations in the future.
