Guillermo del Toro rejects AI for Pan's Labyrinth 3D restoration

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro announced that the upcoming 3D and HDR re‑release of his 2006 fantasy film *Pan's Labyrinth* will be restored entirely by human hands, refusing to use artificial‑intelligence tools. Speaking at Comic‑Con International in San Diego on 24 July 2026, del Toro said, “Absolutely no cursed Artificial Intelligence,” and emphasized the need to “spend time” to preserve the beauty and power of art.

The restored version is scheduled to return to cinemas on 9 October 2026, marking the film’s 20th anniversary. Del Toro explained that he chose the slower, higher‑quality approach rather than a quick, AI‑driven one, arguing that protecting artistic heritage outweighs any efficiency gains.
