Guillermo Ochoa becomes first Mexican to play in six World Cups as Mexico opens 2026 tournament

Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa celebrated a historic milestone during the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Mexican player to appear in six editions of the tournament. The 40‑year‑old said, "Estou muito feliz por alcançar esse recorde," after Mexico's 2‑0 win over South Africa at the Estadio Azteca.

Spain’s goalkeeper David Raya later praised Ochoa, calling him "un referente mundial en la portería" and noting the Mexican’s legendary status following memorable saves against Brazil in 2014 and Germany in 2018. Ochoa's record places him alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are also expected to debut at the North American World Cup.

The achievement highlights Ochoa’s long‑term contribution to Mexican football and adds a personal highlight to the inaugural game of the tournament hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
