Guillermo Ochoa mourns four fans killed in Mexico City celebration

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa expressed condolences to the families of four people who died while celebrating the national team's 2‑0 victory over Ecuador in Mexico City. He said, “Condolencias y pésame por lo que pasó en Reforma, es una tristeza,” urging fans to enjoy football responsibly.

The deaths occurred in the early hours of 1 July amid massive crowds gathering at the Ángel de la Independencia and along Reforma, where three victims succumbed to asphyxiation and a fourth suffered a convulsive crisis that led to cardiac arrest. City authorities reported that about 1.4 million people celebrated across the capital, with roughly 484 000 concentrated in the main thoroughfares. Mexico’s head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, also called for responsible celebrations ahead of the upcoming round‑of‑16 match against England at the 2026 World Cup.
