Guillermo Ochoa reflects on career setbacks and near-retirement
In a recent documentary by Claro Sports, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and former coach Javier Aguirre discussed the impact of technical decisions during the 2010 World Cup. Ochoa revealed that being benched in favor of Óscar Pérez was a significant setback that prompted him to seek opportunities in European football to further his career. Aguirre acknowledged the decision, stating, “I hurt him... You do it without any intention... thinking about the best for the team.”
Ochoa also shared details regarding his retirement following the 2026 World Cup. He admitted that a year prior to his final tournament, he nearly retired early due to persistent physical struggles. He described a difficult period involving constant injuries and injections, noting, “I was about to retire from football and leave it, because I could no longer take it. Injections, recoveries, I couldn't even walk.” Now 41, Ochoa remains involved in football through business and player development.
