Guillermo Ochoa retires after historic World Cup 2026 appearance

Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa announced his retirement following a cameo in Mexico's 3‑0 victory over the Czech Republic at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Entering the match in the 12th minute, Ochoa kept a clean sheet and capped a six‑World‑Cup career that began with Germany 2006 and included appearances in South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, Qatar 2022 and the host tournament in 2026. He played 11 World Cup matches, earning five wins, two draws and four defeats.

Ochoa debuted for Club América in 2004 and became the first Mexican goalkeeper to play for several European clubs, including AJ Aix‑en‑Provence, Malaga, Granada, Standard Liège and AEL Limassol. He was named CONCACAF Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007, was a Golden Ball nominee the same year, and holds the record for most CONCACAF Gold Cup titles (six). His memorable performances against Brazil, Germany and other top nations have cemented his legendary status in Mexican football history.
