Mexico political landscape shifts ahead of 2027 elections
As Mexico approaches the 2027 electoral cycle, political parties are undergoing significant shifts in membership and strategy. Morena, the ruling party, has seen massive growth, increasing its membership from approximately 2.3 million in 2023 to over 11.6 million in 2026. Its allies, the PVEM and PT, have also expanded their bases. In contrast, traditional opposition parties have faced declines; the PRI's membership dropped significantly, with the INE identifying over 95,000 inconsistent records, including 27,000 deceased individuals. Movimiento Ciudadano also reported a decrease in affiliates.
Political tensions are rising as leaders debate the future of governance. Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas of Movimiento Ciudadano has criticized the Morena administration, claiming the movement is 'imploding' due to corruption and violence. Meanwhile, PRI leader Alejandro Moreno has called for a unified national opposition front to counter Morena's dominance. However, internal divisions persist within the opposition, as Movimiento Ciudadano has explicitly rejected calls for an alliance with the PRI.
On the administrative front, Morena national president Ariadna Montiel stated that the party has not yet finalized dates for announcing state coordinators in 12 states, a key step for the 2027 gubernatorial races. Additionally, in Chihuahua, Guillermo Ramírez has concluded his term as President of the Congress.
