Mexican Senate approves General Law on Animal Welfare

The Mexican Senate has approved the General Law on Animal Welfare, Care, and Protection. The legislation recognizes animals as sentient beings and establishes a national strategy to ensure their well-being across five domains: nutrition, environment, health, behavior, and mental state.

The new law creates a National Registry of Companion Animals and a registry of offenders to combat cruelty and abandonment. It also regulates animal treatment in various sectors, including sports, entertainment, zoos, and aquariums, while establishing a transition process to end the use of companion animals in research and teaching.

In the state of Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier reported that the local Animal Welfare and Protection of Sentient Beings Cell is 88% complete. This initiative aims to provide veterinary care, rehabilitation, and shelter for various species, moving forward with state-level protections while the national legislative process continues.
