Guillermo Zuany obtains judicial protection against arrest in Chihuahua

Guillermo Arturo Zuany Portillo, the former prosecutor for Strategic Operations and Anti-Kidnapping in Chihuahua, has obtained an indirect amparo that prevents the execution of an arrest warrant issued against him.

The judicial protection also limits the state prosecutor's ability to request an Interpol Red Notice or a migration alert to locate him. Gilberto Loya Chávez, acting head of the Chihuahua State Attorney General's Office (FGE), confirmed the institution has been notified and will comply with the ruling while continuing investigations.

Zuany's legal defense, which includes former judges Delia Valentina Meléndez Olivas and María Alejandra Ramos Durán, argues that the alleged crimes do not warrant mandatory pretrial detention. The defense further contends that the arrest order violates principles of presumption of innocence and proportionality, noting that Zuany has established ties to Chihuahua.

Zuany resigned from his position on May 13, 2026. The legal proceedings regarding the suspension are being handled by the Eleventh District Court in the State of Chihuahua.
