Guinea advances mining sector with Simandou production and new sovereign wealth fund

Guinea is advancing its mining sector through the production of the Simandou iron ore project and the planned establishment of a sovereign wealth fund. Simandou, a major project long in development, entered production in late 2025 and is expected to significantly impact the national economy.

To manage the volatility of mining revenues, particularly from bauxite and iron ore, the Guinean government plans to make its sovereign wealth fund operational by 2026. Projections suggest the fund could receive approximately $4 billion in endowments between 2029 and 2035 as large-scale extractive projects reach full capacity.

Despite the success of Simandou, the country faces challenges in mining diversification. The Kalia deposit, which holds an estimated 7.2 billion tonnes of resources, has remained in development limbo for twenty years, highlighting the difficulty of bringing historical sites into active production.
