Guinea bans France 24 following editorial dispute

Guinea’s media regulator, the Haute Autorité de la Communication (HAC), has issued an immediate nationwide ban on the international news channel France 24. The decision follows an incident on September 14, 2026, where a journalist used what was deemed an ‘inaccurate qualifier’ regarding President Mamadi Doumbouya.

The HAC stated that France 24 failed to comply with a formal notice issued on September 16 to rectify the editorial error. The regulator described the channel’s refusal to comply as a ‘manifest, deliberate and characterized’ defiance of authority and a violation of Guinean sovereignty. The ban extends to all platforms, including satellite, cable, mobile applications, websites, and social media. Additionally, the HAC has revoked the press accreditations of all France 24 correspondents and collaborators in the country.

In response, France 24 Director Vanessa Burggraf wrote to President Doumbouya on September 17, requesting a reconsideration of the measures. Burggraf acknowledged the error, noting that the inaccurate term was ‘immediately recognized and corrected’ on-air and online. She emphasized that the mistake was ‘devoid of any intention to disrespect’ the Guinean institutions or the presidency. The channel has since met with the journalist involved and called for greater editorial vigilance to prevent future incidents.
