Guinea economic outlook: World Bank warns of poverty risks despite mining boom

The World Bank has released its third Economic Update report for Guinea, highlighting a period of historic growth driven by the mining sector, particularly bauxite production and the upcoming Simandou iron ore project. The report projects significant economic expansion, with growth rates estimated at 8.8% in 2026, 11.6% in 2027, and 10.7% in 2028.

Despite these positive macroeconomic indicators, the World Bank warns that mining wealth alone will not be sufficient to reduce poverty sustainably. The institution emphasizes the need for structural reforms to bolster the private sector, agriculture, and formal employment.

In a related discussion on the role of the state and private sector in Conakry, Mohamed Kourouma, CEO of HAMANA, called for national unity and peace to foster a stable investment climate. Kourouma argued that stability is essential for attracting investors, creating jobs, and ensuring that economic development is a collective responsibility shared by both the government and private citizens.
