Guinea faces industrial challenges despite record bauxite exports

Guinea has solidified its position as a major global player in the bauxite market, exporting approximately 182.8 million tonnes of raw ore in 2025. With estimated probable reserves of 7.4 billion tonnes, the country’s mining sector accounts for roughly one-fifth of its GDP, over 90% of its exports, and nearly 20% of public revenue.

During a roundtable organized by the Observatoire guinéen de conjoncture économique (OGCE) in Conakry, experts highlighted the challenges of transitioning from raw ore extraction to local industrial processing. Key obstacles to developing a domestic alumina and aluminum industry include the high energy demands of electrolysis, the need for reliable water and electricity, improved transport and port infrastructure, and the environmental management of industrial waste, such as red mud.

Speakers also noted a ‘bauxite paradox,’ where record export volumes do not automatically guarantee economic diversification or increased domestic technical capacity. Furthermore, approximately three-quarters of Guinea’s bauxite exports are directed toward China, a concentration that increases the nation's vulnerability to geopolitical shifts and fluctuations in international demand.
