Guinea implements measures to combat plastic waste

Guinea is intensifying efforts to combat plastic waste through new administrative actions and regulatory deadlines. The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has begun sensitizing other government departments, including the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, to promote better waste management practices. As part of this initiative, the Ministry of Environment provided waste bins to the Ministry of Justice to encourage the use of alternatives to plastic containers.

In tandem with these awareness efforts, a decree is in place to end the import, production, and commercialization of single-use plastic products in Guinea. Companies have until September 20, 2026, to exhaust their current stocks. Legal experts have noted that while the decision is a positive step toward sustainable development, the government's limited communication regarding the decree may create administrative challenges for businesses attempting to transition to biodegradable materials by the deadline.
