Guinea inaugurates first gold refinery and launches landfill rehabilitation
President Mamadi Doumbouya inaugurated the Nimba Gold Refinery in Gbessia, Conakry, on November 1, 2026. The facility has a designed annual processing capacity of 733 tonnes. This infrastructure aims to shift Guinea from an exporter of raw gold to a regional hub for local processing, enhancing economic sovereignty and job creation. The government plans to have the central bank purchase up to 30 percent of gold produced by industrial and semi-industrial mining companies to support domestic refining.
Separately, the Guinean government launched a project on November 2, 2026, to rehabilitate the Dar es Salam landfill in Conakry. Following a deadly landslide in August that caused 36 deaths, the site is being closed and transformed into an urban park. The 12-month project is funded by Winning International Group and involves stabilizing the 7.2 million tonnes of waste, installing waterproof covers, and implementing drainage and gas treatment systems. A modern landfill site will be established in Baritodé, Coyah, to replace it.
