Burkina Faso inaugurates first national gold refinery RAFFINOR-BF
Burkina Faso is set to inaugurate RAFFINOR-BF, its first national gold refinery, in Ouagadougou. The facility, located on a five-hectare site in Ouaga 2000, is scheduled to be officially opened by President Ibrahim Traoré on Monday, September 28, 2026.
The refinery is designed to process up to 400 kilograms of gold per day, totaling approximately 150 tonnes annually. The complex includes an analytical laboratory, a foundry, a secure storage area, and a jewelry workshop. It will also serve as the headquarters for the Société nationale des substances précieuses (SONASP).
By refining gold locally, the government aims to reduce the export of raw gold, capture more value within the country, and improve control over its mineral resources. The refined gold is expected to reach a purity of 99.99%, meeting the international Good Delivery standard. The project is estimated to create 100 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs.
