Guinea local authorities launch market sanitation and reorganization efforts

Local authorities in Guinea have launched initiatives to reorganize and clean major markets in the Kindia and Mandiana regions.

In the rural commune of Damakania, located in the Kindia prefecture, officials and citizens conducted a large-scale sanitation operation at the local grand marché on September 6. The initiative aims to remove waste accumulated over several years and promote sustainable waste management to protect public health. Mayor Elhadj Hamidou Sylla stated that the operation fulfills a commitment made to local residents, particularly market women, to address long-standing sanitation concerns.

In Mandiana, municipal authorities began clearing physical obstructions around the grand marché on September 5 to improve traffic flow and market organization. Supported by law enforcement, officials removed stalls and obstacles that hindered the movement of people and vehicles. Following a month of unsuccessful sensitization efforts, authorities seized goods from non-compliant traders. Municipal counselor Siaka Diallo indicated that these reorganization efforts will continue across all markets in Mandiana to ensure public spaces remain clear.
