Mamadi Doumbouya marks five years of power in Guinea

Mamadi Doumbouya has marked five years in power in Guinea following the 2021 coup that ousted Alpha Condé. While he initially pledged to lead a short transition and return power to civilians, he was elected president in December 2025 with 86.72% of the vote. This election occurred amidst the exile of major political opponents, including members of the UFR and the FNDC.

His administration has focused on leveraging Guinea's vast natural resources, such as bauxite and high-grade iron ore from the Simandou project. However, critics point to a decline in democratic freedoms, citing the closure of private media, restrictions on public demonstrations, and the intimidation of political voices.

On the diplomatic front, Guinea continues to engage with the international community. Recently, five new ambassadors from Greece, Slovakia, Congo, Panama, and Denmark presented their credentials to the Guinean Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen bilateral cooperation and economic transformation efforts.
