Guinea officials clash over electricity exports and domestic supply
Tensions rose in the Guinean National Assembly during the debate over the 2026 supplementary finance law. Deputy Ousmane Kaba criticized the government for exporting electricity to neighboring countries while Conakry continues to face supply shortages, calling the situation a paradox.
In response, Economy Minister Mariama Ciré Sylla clarified that these exchanges are part of a connection-sharing mechanism with partner countries rather than simple sales. She noted that while there are arrears, the partner nations do pay for the service.
Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouyaté defended the administration of President Mamadi Doumbouya, stating the country faced a total lack of electricity when the president took office. Kouyaté criticized Kaba’s remarks, describing those questioning the export policy as “illiterates who have the skin of intellectuals.”
