Ethiopia and Guinea launch bids for Africa Cup of Nations

Ethiopia and Guinea have launched significant bids and administrative reforms regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Ethiopian Football Federation has officially submitted a bid to host the 2028 tournament, marking a potential return to hosting for the first time since 1976. The bid, supported by the federal government, faces challenges including regional security concerns in Amhara and Oromia, as well as infrastructure needs, as the country currently has limited CAF-approved stadiums.

In Guinea, the government has officially announced a candidacy to host the 2032 or 2036 editions of the tournament. To support its sporting ambitions, the Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has scheduled an Extraordinary and Elective General Assembly for October 27, 2026, to elect a new President and Executive Committee. This move aims to resolve a period of institutional instability caused by high vacancy rates within the federation's leadership.

Additionally, the Guinean Football Federation has formally proposed a joint hosting bid with Senegal for the 2032 AFCON, citing historical ties and geographic proximity as key advantages for logistics and infrastructure sharing.
