Guinea teachers demand contract appointments, warn of nationwide strike
On 1 August 2026, hundreds of contract teachers who were not retained gathered at the Bourse du travail in Conakry. The meeting, organized by the collective of contract teachers, was led by Diaka Sow, who knelt and appealed directly to President Mamadi Doumbouya, warning that without a signed engagement order before the school term, the teachers would launch an unlimited general strike.
Commission member Mohamed Bangoura (also known as “Roméo”) told the crowd that the dossier of roughly 4 500 teachers is almost complete, that the teachers are already recorded in the FUGAS system and that their appointment should occur without a new competitive exam. He urged patience while verification checks are finalized, but the teachers remain prepared to strike if the order is not issued before the holidays end.
