Guinea to acquire 200 buses and 2,000 new taxis for Conakry transport overhaul

Guinea's government announced a major upgrade of urban transport in its capital, Conakry. Transport Minister Ousmane Gaoual Diallo said the state will purchase 200 new public buses and up to 2,000 taxis in phases, with an initial batch of 300 taxis already ready and 50 previously bought buses soon to enter service. The acquisitions are funded by the same partner that supported a recent taxi renewal program, and the buses will be operated by private companies selected through an ongoing tender.

The reforms also include creating a new operator to replace the struggling Société des transports de Guinée (SOTRAGUI). Officials aim to expand public‑transport capacity as Conakry's population, currently about 2.7 million, could rise to 5.5 million by 2040, putting pressure on the city’s aging fleet.
