Guinea requests repatriation of Almamy Bocar Biro Barry's remains from France

The Guinean government has officially requested that France repatriate the remains of Almamy Bocar Biro Barry, the last sovereign of the Foutah theocratic state, along with his companions. The remains, including the skulls of his son Modi Sory, his brother Thierno Ciré, and his warlord Satigui Modou, are currently held at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris.

Almamy Bocar Biro Barry was a key figure in the anti-colonial resistance who fought French forces in the late 19th century. Following his defeat at the Battle of Porédaka in 1896, he was decapitated, and his head was taken to France as a trophy.

Guinean Minister of Culture Moussa Moïse Sylla announced that if France approves the restitution, the government plans to organize national funerals to honor the fallen leaders. The minister clarified that the intent is not to display the remains in a museum, but to ensure they are buried with dignity according to local traditions.
