Guinea warns against unjustified bottled water price hikes
The Guinean Ministry of Industry and Commerce has issued a warning against unjustified price increases for bottled water. Authorities noted speculative price hikes following the implementation of a ban on the import, production, and sale of single-use plastic items.
In a statement released on October 1, 2026, the ministry, led by Aboubacar Kourouma, emphasized that the environmental measure does not justify higher costs for consumers. The department has called on producers, importers, distributors, and traders to revert to the price levels maintained prior to the ban to protect household purchasing power.
To support the transition, the ministry is exploring alternatives such as different bottle formats and the use of biodegradable sachets. Market surveillance will be strengthened to combat abusive commercial practices. Consumers are encouraged to report any unjustified price increases or speculative behavior via the ministry’s green line at 142.
