Guinean rights groups demand international probe into Forécariah mass grave

Human rights organizations and political coalitions in Guinea are demanding an independent international investigation following the discovery of a mass grave in Forécariah. On August 24, six men were found in a forested area in the Allassoyah sector; the victims reportedly had their hands tied and eyes blindfolded.

The Front National pour la défense de la démocratie (FNDD) has formally petitioned the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to intervene through United Nations mechanisms regarding potential forced disappearances and extrajudicial executions. The FNDD is calling for the involvement of independent forensic experts to support the local prosecutor's investigation and ensure results are made public.

A coalition of twenty West African civil society organizations, including groups from Togo and Senegal, has also joined the call for transparency. They are seeking DNA analysis, autopsies, and witness protection measures. The coalition has reached out to the United States, France, and the European Union delegation for technical and judicial support, while also planning to contact ECOWAS and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights.

In response, Guinea's Commission for Defense and Security held an extraordinary session on August 29. Led by Minister Ibrahima Kalil, the commission stated that no definitive conclusions can be drawn yet and pledged to shed light on the incident, while cautioning against the spread of unverified information.
