Guisandesa goat herd begins transhumance from Ávila to Madrid

A herd of Guisandesa goats, an indigenous breed from the province of Ávila, has begun a transhumance journey from Bohoyo to Madrid. The migration, which started on October 10, is scheduled to conclude on October 25.

The initiative aims to promote the conservation of the breed and highlight the value of extensive livestock farming. The Guisandesa goat is characterized by its reddish coat and white ears, but the population is critically low, with fewer than 300 specimens remaining across three herds. Efforts by the Diputación de Ávila and Acapri have been underway since 2023 to recover the breed.

The route passes through several localities, including Piedrahíta, Villafranca de la Sierra, Villatoro, Muñana, Solosancho, and La Colilla, before reaching Ávila on October 22. On October 23, the animals will be moved to Madrid's Casa de Campo, culminating in their participation in the Fiesta de la Trashumancia in the center of the capital on October 25. The event includes educational and cultural activities to showcase traditional pastoral knowledge.
