Guiyang boy survives 10-story fall after awning provides buffer
A three-year-old boy survived a fall from a 10th-floor apartment in Guiyang, Guizhou, after a fruit shop's retractable awning provided a critical buffer. The incident occurred on October 1 during heavy rain.
To protect merchandise from the rain, the shop owner, Mr. Deng, had fully extended a two-meter retractable awning. The boy fell approximately 30 meters, striking the awning before hitting the ground. While the impact severely damaged the equipment, valued at over 1,000 yuan, it prevented a fatal impact.
Witnesses reported that the boy remained conscious and was able to sit up and reach out to bystanders. Medical examinations confirmed he suffered no fractures or internal bleeding, only minor abrasions and bleeding from the nose and mouth. He remains under hospital observation.
The boy's father offered to compensate the shop owner for the damaged awning, but Mr. Deng declined, stating that the child's safety was the priority. The incident has prompted public discussions regarding child safety and the necessity of protective measures on balconies and windows in high-rise buildings.
