Guizhou chef sentenced to life for 2019 murder and dismemberment

A man in Guizhou has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of his wife. The defendant, a chef, confessed to killing his wife during an argument and subsequently used his professional skills to dismember and boil the body to dispose of it in parts.

To conceal the crime, the man used the victim's phone to send messages suggesting she had left home due to an affair. The case remained unsolved for years until DNA testing in March of last year confirmed that a skull found in a remote mountain area belonged to the victim.

The Guiyang Intermediate People's Court ruled that while the crime was severe, the defendant's expressed remorse and potential for rehabilitation warranted a life sentence rather than the death penalty. The victim's family has appealed the decision, seeking the death penalty.
