Guizhou engineering landmarks become major tourism hubs
Guizhou province in China features significant engineering landmarks that have transitioned from infrastructure projects into major tourism hubs. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, which opened to traffic in late September 2025, has been recognized as the world’s highest bridge at approximately 2,054 feet above the Beipan River. Designed to connect Guanling Bouyei-Miao Autonomous County with Zhenfeng County, the bridge was engineered at such a height to avoid the cost and complexity of constructing longer mountain tunnels.
The bridge serves as a destination for adventure sports and sightseeing, featuring a glass observation hall, a narrow plank walk, and nighttime light shows. Similarly, the Balinghe Bridge in Anshun serves as a notable landmark in the region. It offers a 370-meter bungee-jumping attraction that has gained international attention for its extreme height.
Both structures highlight a regional strategy to integrate large-scale engineering with tourism, utilizing the mountainous landscape to attract visitors through extreme sports and panoramic views.
